Sawah Bali

Sawah+Subak Definition

In 2012, UNESCO designated 5 World Heritage Sites in Bali.

The designation recognizes the 1,000+ year-old subak (canals and social system) and the sawah (rice paddies) in Bali. No solution has emerged to protect these areas.

#1 Threat: Over-development.
#1 Consequence: Severe water shortages and food insecurity.

Sawah Bali has a plan to conserve the sawah, the subak, and the future of Bali’s farmers.

The World Heritage Site designations in the sawah recognize the subak - a 1,000+ year old engineered canal system that manages water resources so efficiently that Bali has always been the most productive sawah in Southeast Asia. There are over 1,500 democratically-managed subak communities in Bali.

But these areas are under constant threat of development. UNESCO does not provide protection for the sites; it is Bali’s responsibility to do so. And we need your support.

Sawah Bali has the land conservation tools to protect the subak and sawah.

Our Mission is to conserve and sustain a working landscape in Bali and to restructure agricultural production to secure greater economic equality and wellness for Bali’s farmers.

Sawah Farmer

Introducing a Land Trust Model to Conserve the Sawah

To conserve the sawah and sustain the subak in the face of constant real estate development pressures, Sawah Bali is working together with the Balinese community to co-create a new model of land conservation. Deferring to Balinese cultural and social attributes, but including land use tools of the American Land Trust, a new hybrid model is emerging. Each farmer will be paid an annuity to not develop their land, in perpetuity. The farmer(s) will retain full ownership of the agricultural land, and if ownership changes hands, the land must continue to be used for agriculture.

To further support the long-term conservation of the sawah, the project intends to increase farmers’ income by supporting a return to traditional organic methods with heritage rices as well as creating value-added products and new markets for the farmers.

These land use protection tools and agricultural restructuring efforts have been used for 30 years to preserve the working landscape in Vermont, USA.

Sawah Bali has launched its Pilot Project in Subak Malung Bulu Jauk to conserve the farms in the villages of Bunutan and Tanggayuda, which comprise a single subak community. We are seeking your support of our Pilot Project.

Your generous contributions will go directly to 135 Family Farms.
100% of the subak have voted to participate.

Famer Overlooking the Sawah
A farmer looks over the sawah.

This is the one and only time we will solicit donations.

There is momentum for this project, and the government of Bali is responding positively.

But we need your help to demonstrate an early success with this model of land conservation!

Help us conserve 135 Balinese farms and rejuvenate Bali's agricultural market.
